Week 3 - Buy & Sell Report
By Mike Beacom

Stock Market Report 9-16

Doug Martin's bum knee has thrust Bobby Rainey into the fantasy spotlight, allowing the former unknown to log 144 yards in a loss to a respectable Carolina defense in Week 2.

A one-week wonder? Fluke? Perhaps, but Rainey really hadn't been given much of a chance in Cleveland and Tampa Bay in his first two NFL seasons, so it's also possible it was his coming-out party.

The Buccaneers hinted Martin could have played but was held out as a precaution. Now one has to wonder if they'll take the same precautions in the next couple weeks. Rainey will get more reps, and fantasy owners in need of running back help should pounce with the hope he sticks.

Here are a few other waiver wire candidates to consider ...

QB Kirk Cousins, Redskins
Not only because he's replacing a fantasy quarterback projected in the top half of the league, but because Cousins could actually be an upgrade from RGIII. That was the case on Sunday, with Cousins completing 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards. He makes use of all of his weapons and takes care of the ball. He's a solid No. 2 for any fantasy owner in need at quarterback.

WR Davante Adams, Packers
The Packers have a knack for turning mid-round receivers into fantasy gold. On Sunday, their rookie wideout caught five balls from Aaron Rodgers for 50 yards, indicating he is gaining trust on the field. He is already stealing passes from Jarrett Boykin and will thrive on days when the opponent overloads to stop Jordy Nelson.

WR Andrew Hawkins, Browns
Seems crazy that Hawkins is owned in less than 20% of leagues even now, weeks after Josh Gordon was suspended. If fantasy owners were unsure who the browns would throw to in Gordon's absence now they know - Hawkins' 22 targets leads the club and ranks tied for second among all AFC receivers.

TE Travis Kelce, Chiefs
Raise your hand if you'd be happy with your tight end turning in 56 catches for 1,000-plus yards. Most of us would, so it's a surprise he's still available in a number of leagues. He was a standout in preseason, a headache for Denver on Sunday and a favorite of Alex Smith's so far.

The waiver wire isn’t the only way for fantasy owners to improve their roster; a well-crafted trade proposal can help every bit as much as picking up an up-and-coming free agent. Here is a look at this week’s buy and sell candidates:

{BUY}

QB Tom Brady, Patriots
Hell ya I'm buying. Look, Brady is not going to "suck" overnight. He is too good, and his team is too good. His early-season struggles are more a product of the developing faces around him. He was good in Week 2, just not fantasy good. But it's only a matter of time. Leaves turn colors, temperatures drop, and Tom Brady logs big numbers. Find him for a bargain.

WR Jeremy Maclin, Eagles
Darren Sproles and Zack Ertz made the biggest plays on Monday but Maclin was the preferred weapon (11 targets) and caught his second score in as many games. Maclin is on pace to have a very nice season but the buzz isn't building, maybe because there is so many other Eagles players to steal Maclin's thunder.

WR Michael Floyd, Cardinals
Coming off a 19-yard performance against the Giants I'd say now is as good of a time to buy Floyd as ever. He was the hero in the win over San Diego in Week 1 and a pick by many to have a breakout season. One setback is not going to derail his season.

{SELL}

RB C.J. Spiller, Bills
Same logic here as my advice to sell on Cordarrelle Patterson last week - big plays make highlight reels but they do not translate into every week fantasy success. Spiller's kickoff return for a touchdown was a key play in Buffalo's victory but it does not make up for his inconsistency as a fantasy back. Fred Jackson is still a factor, meaning Spiller can only be a disappointment (most of the time).

WR James Jones, Raiders
It's true, Jones was a touchdown machine in Packers colors, but this is Oakland and it would be a surprise to see him continue his fast start. As much as we're encouraged by Derek Carr, the Raiders are a still-forming offense with too many egos to satisfy. We see consistency in Jones' future.

TE Delanie Walker, Titans
Walker is a solid No. 2 fantasy tight end, but he's not as good as he's making himself out to be lately. A touchdown in each of Tennessee's first two games... 10 catches for 142 yards last week... sorry, not buying it. The Cowboys made Vernon Davis look fabulous in Week 1, so Walker's Week 2 performance is suspect. He is ripe to return to earth soon.
